Mercedes is the Countess de Morcerf, the wife of Fernand and mother of Albert. The former lover of Edmond Dantes(the Count) even 20 years later she harbors anguish over the fact that he was thrown in jail and "executed." A commoner, she is a kind woman who puts on airs of aristocracy and tries to keep her son from the horrors of the past.
